Noob help. Finding engine code on block.

Howdy all...

I trying to purchase a 2001 Carolla. Apparently the car had its motor replaced due to the p/o driving across the country w/o checking the oil. A new engine was installed and all is well. 30k miles later, Im trying to purchase the car. The owner doesnt have the title, it was lost in a move. Im working with North Carolina on re-issuing a title. They say due to a new engine being installed a new title is needed and I need to give them the engine number on the block. This doesnt make much sense to me, but its what the NCDMV said...

The owner is useless, so Ive got to do it myself. Since I do not have the car in my posession, I cant crawl around under it and waste time trying to find it. Can anyone point me in the direction on where to find the engine code casting so I can get the ball rolling and start driving the Toy?

2001 carolla, auto, 4 cyl...

Thanks a ton!
Andrew

Also, I tried searching "engine code location" and a few others... Kept getting this "Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 134217728 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 71 bytes) in /usr/home/toyotanation/public_html/forum/search.php on line 1034"

on the previous gen of corolla the vin was on a plate attached to the end of the engine near the transmission bell housing. of course if its a rebuilt engine (like a jasper or atk) then the vin plate has probably been removed. i think the dmv just wants to make sure someone didn't swap in something stolen or illegal. what exactly do they need off the car? do they want the VIN off the engine block or do they want the engine code or do that want a serial number?

Thank you for the prompt reply... Sorry, I know my posting was kind of vauge. What they said they need is the VIN off the engine. Ill give them a call tomorrow and see if I can speak to someone who can give me more info on exactly what/why it is needed.
