Vibration -- caused by faulty serpentine tensioner?
I just purchased a used 2001 Corolla LE. When I went to evaluate it, I missed a vibration that was happening because I accelerated right by it without noticing it. Now that I own the car, I need to figure out what is causing it.
I've already checked the motor mounts, and they are fine.
The vibration only occurs at about 15-25 MPH, only with the clutch engaged, and only while accelerating.
Is it possible for a faulty serpentine tensioner to cause this? I see the tensioner is leaking oil, and it is bouncing around a little bit.
Also, according to most sources it appears that 16620-22013 is the current part number for the tensioner, yet somewhere on this forum I saw someone mention that 16620-0W101 had replaced it. It think this person was just wrong, but I just wanted to make certain.
Part number may have been for the newer generation Corolla (9th gen) or for a Celica/MR2. There is a TSB for the belt tensioner assembly for the 8th gen Corolla (#EG01501).
As far as I can tell - #16620-22013 is the latest upgrade from the OEM tensioner on the 8th generation Corolla (old part #16620-22012).
Vibration can definitely come from the tensioner, especially if it is leaking like that. Can also come from the VVTi system (depends on your RPMs when that happens) - a clogged OCV filter or faulty OCV can cause "stumbling" at certain RPMs and throttle positions.

Since it's always at the same speed regardless of gear (so RPMs don't matter), and since I can see oil leaking from the tensioner, I'm gonna start there and assume that's the problem child.
I was told by an eBay seller that 16620-0W093 is the new part number for 16620-22013. Can anyone confirm this?
Two dealers told me 16620-0W093 replaced 16620-0W101 which replaced 16620-22013 --> 16620-22012 --> 16620-22011 -- 16620-22010
16620-0W093 & 16620-0W101 might just be newer numbers for the same part of 16620-22013
I installed 16620-0W093 on my 8th gen corolla a few weeks ago rattle gone...
I suggest you start with the new tensioner... I would NOT go with the 16620-22010 model as the TSB instructed dealers to replace 16620-22010 with 16620-22011 so the 16620-22010 must have had problems...

I paid 69 bucks for the 22013 from a dealer, as it is the tensioner, not the whole thing, just the little shock looking part which is the culprit of the noise.
The dealer this link is from is in NC.
The newer part JeffG talks of, 16620-0W093, is a little cheaper still. http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...?siteid=215498
Its best to call, as sometimes you cant get the part searched right. If you search for 166200w093, its higher, but a tick mark in the middle
16620-0w093 will be cheaper, as it is the sub assembly.

How hard is it to replace just the tensioner shock rather than the whole assembley?

Remove belt, easy. Then there is one 12 mm nut on top and a 12mm bolt on bottom, and it comes off. Take your time, its easy. I took the whole assembly of and repacked the bearing in the pulley.
After I posted I went to car and look myself and seen it was only 2 bolts (<~~~~Idiot) I was confused how everyone was changing just that piece when the pictures of the whole assembly, you can't tell that it is bolted on, it looks like it is machined on.
Thanks for your help, this forum and all the people are awesome!
