Check engine light on, jerky movement, vibration at idle

Here's the story: my dad owned the Corolla for the past 10 years, and never took care of it. He rarely changed the oil, or gave it a tune-up, or anything of that sort, and he drove it fairly hard. Despite all this, it held up beautifully. Now it's my car, and I drove it for the first time today. I'm fairly new to a stick, so I overrevved occasionally and let the clutch out in an unsmooth movement sometimes (only stalled once though). I started noticing problems when driving at a low speed in second gear through a parking lot. The car was bucking much more than it should have been, despite the fact that my foot was completely off the clutch and my other foot was steady on the accelerator. Then I was sitting at idle at a light, and I noticed the car was vibrating much more than it should, and making a slight clunking/thunking noise. Later, I turned the car on, and the check engine light came on with it. I still had to get home, and I managed, though the problems grew worse. There was some slight bucking in first gear, and even more bucking in second and third gears (fourth seemed decent, and I didn't go past that). Idle was still terrible, and it was making rattling noises as well. Any ideas? All help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I just checked, and it turns out it may just be an oil issue. I'm running extremely low, so I'll try adding some more tomorrow. I also noticed that the bottom of the engine bay seems to be covered in oil, so I'm thinking I may have a leak, especially since the oil was changed fairly recently (before I got possession of the car). Is there a common place for 8th gen Corollas to leak that I should know about?

1. When my car was low on oil, it didn't vibrate, just got noisy, like the rattling you mentioned. I had it down to about 1 quart before because the bloody thing burnt so much oil.

2. If it's jerky in low gears and the clutch engages difficult, adjust the clutch pedal in more. There's a nut under the clutch. My wife wears the crap outta my clutch, but it's got a long life and thank God adjustable.

3. Please find out what the CEL code is for us. (At autozone or a friend with OBD2 scanner)

4. As per the oil leak, any puddles or significant stains on the ground? If you had the oil changed, there is a chance they spilled some maybe? Does the car use or burn oil?

I have the same vibration problem with mine right now. Mine is an Air leak on the Intake Manifold Gasket. Test your Vacuum lines and intake gasket. might help a little...

I got a diagnostic test performed, and was informed that I have developed a cylinder 1 misfire. This makes sense I suppose, considering the symptoms get much better at higher RPMs. The plug wires appear fine, so I guess it's either a plug issue, a coil pack issue, or a timing issue (the latter doesn't seem likely). I hand it over to the mechanic Sunday evening, and for those interested, I'll post a follow-up Monday evening.

If you feel comfortable, you can swap coil #1 with coil #4 and reset the code. Check and see what code get's thrown. That will diagnose whether is a bad coil or not. You can do the same with the injectors to eliminate a bad injector. Also a compression test can identify leak down in the rings, leaky intake or exhaust valves.

I posted a topic about my misfire in cylinder 4, which was diagnosed as a bad exhaust valve Hope all goes better for you!

For fun, I was looking at specs on the 1998 - 2002 corolla and I saw this.

Website: http://consumerguideauto.howstuffwor...-corolla-2.htm

Rough idle: Fuel injectors on 1.8-liter engine may cause rough idle and the check-engine light to illuminate. (1999)

It's all been fixed now. Apparently it was bad tie rod as well as a plug wire. $350 and one alignment later I'm back on the road with no complaints (few, anyways... the clutch makes a *ping* sound when I let off, and the trunk leaks, but other than that...).
