Overhaul??

I have a 2002 Corolla, just turned 108,000 miles. I've been burning huge amounts of oil for quite some time. For the longest time the dealership couldn't tell me why, or even have a clue why. They just said "your car burns a lot of oil."

I had it into the dealership the other day for an oil change and regular service. They said it's either a valve ring, or piston ring. They changed out the spark plugs, they were heavily oil fouled. New plugs are making it run much better.

They said I also need a new coil or fuel injector.

Is $2500.00 for an overhaul sound about right?

Overhaul? you mean rebuilding the engine? or swapping a new engine to your vehicle? Does this price also include the new coil & fuel injector? If it does and includes labor than yes its a pretty good deal from a dealership. If its just cost of parts without labor get ready to pay about another $2,000 in labor.

that dealer sucks then, its a design issue with the early 1zzfe engines. they were designed to use low sulfur fuels that were never introduced here like they were supposed to have been. as a result the oil control rings get clogged up as do the oil return holes, any toyota dealer should know this. they're morons.

I have the same problem (as do many) with burning large quantities of oil. Anything that can be done to unclog oil control rings & return holes? An additive or anything?

what you should do is take the head off clean the valve bottoms, take the pistons out clean or replace all rings, clean the pistons too....now for the oil holes behind the oil ring make them bigger holes. put it all back together and there you go, no more burning oil.
