Chaging the clock color!

So I was wondering. I went through changing my gauges to blue, along with the A/C panel.

Now I've been hearing that the LCD clock is almost impossible to change the color on, unless you REALLY know what you're doing. I've looked online for the past 2 hours to try and find a how-to, but couldn't find anything.

Is it possible to take out the clock and just slip in a blue film to change the color? Someone said if you take the little colored plastic tabs on folders you can cut them to the right size and slip it in front of the LCD, and it'll tint the color.

If it's actually really hard to replace, then I'm thinking about replacing it with something else, donno what yet though.

Any thoughts, ideas, or has anyone ever done this before!? I want help before I actually take it out and ruin it, which I know I will. haha.

If anyone's done it, provide some pics! Thanks

most people don't mess with it. i will tho, since i know the ae92's used a white LCD so i was planning on retro fitting one into an 8Th gen clock housing to give me a white clock. i will take pics and post it up once its done. as for other colors, i would find one from another car that is the color you want and retrofit it, or use one from a ae92 and then put blue cellophane in front of it.

So I took out the clock and took it apart, and this is what I get:

a soldered down lcd clock face. :'( No way to change the light on this sucker I'm guessing. I also tried holding up a piece of cellophane in front and it still showed up green. I'm going crazy here! :'(

someone has already written up a DIY for this on another forum, they used a tab from a 3 ring binder divider, and their clock was nice and red. the thread is either on trdforums.com, or corollacustomz.ca

Just to be really technical, you're looking at a VFD screen.

I tried putting cellophane over it, and it just made it a darker green. I put like pure blue cellophane over it too, like a deep blue, still didn't work.

And thanks for the technicalities. haha. I didn't know what the hell it was! =p

I can't figure out a way to make this thing blue! I almost need a blue lens for it, something that will filter out the green and only show the blue spectrum, but I guess if that was the case the clock would be super dim. argh, I'm going crazy here! :'(

I'm trying to find a place that would do a custom VFD screen (thanks Buurin for the update, lol) and seeing if there's a way to get a similar clock in white then put blue cellophane over it, then it would actually work. lol. Who knows.

Ya beat me to it Buurin.

Here's an idea if you want to get adventurous. Digikey sells VFD's but the online catalog is a pain to search through. You'd probably have to pull the current one out, get the number off the back if there is one, and try to cross reference it.

You might be able to use a color filter (tabs) but I think it will dim it a good bit. Try a photography/lighting or photoshop site and ask them.

Color gels used in lighting would work, but it's not really changing the color to the target color, only adding to the green.

Now I'm interested in seeing if DigiKey has a VFD that can be swapped in.
