Issue: I turn my car on and it sometimes shuts right off again
Hello all
I have an issue starting the vehicle sometimes.
I run the car on, engine is running and then 5 to 10 seconds later the car will shut off
The battery light will be red. I simply turn the key and the car restarts. Once it gets going I don't have any issues. It's just initially after starting the car.
Could be a weak battery - if it only gives you enough juice to crank the engine over, it might be putting too much of a load on the charging system. Alternator works much harder than it should - too much of a load could cause the engine to stall out.
If it is a fuel filter issue - it would consistently do this every couple of seconds instead of going away after the first time around.
I would double check that the spark plugs are good (check gap, note any plug fouling). Coudl also be a very dirty MAF sensor. Sensor sits in the lid of the airbox - MAF wires and the IAT sensor could be covered with gunk - that is causing the ECM to read incorrectly.
Fuel filter is inside the fuel pump assembly - the whole works are inside the gas tank. Have to pull the rear seat cushion out to get at the access panel above the fuel tank.
i would think it would be a dead alternator. If you start the car and theres nothing to charge the battery(dead alternator) then the engine would just die. dead alt and dead battery.
Thanks for the advice. I will give the car a tune up(does anyone know of a good guide?) and check into those other suggestions. I should note that this problem is intermittent. Sometimes the car will just hesitate( or as my mechanic would say fall flat on it's face) and then recover. And sometimes it doesn't happen

Intermittent connection to the MAF sensor could do this, as well as a vacuum leak. Might just need a good comprehensive tune up. You can download a PDF of the service schedule from the main Toyota website - just follow the links from the Owner's section.

I don't think we have MAF sensor on the 8th gen. We have a MAP sensor attached to the throttle body...

no i'm pretty sure they stopped usiung Mass Air Flow sensors when they put the 4afe in the 93 corolla. we use Manifold Air Pressure sensors in all the new ones including vvti motors. that is why you can take the intake tube off your throttle body and it still runs.
Fish expo101 do you even know the difference or you just trying to sound cool?
A MAF sensor it the big case with the flap door like the old fuel injected corollas and it measured how much air flowed thru so the computer knew how much fuel to squirt in.
a Map sensor measures the pressure inside the intake manifold.
The Mass Air Flow sensor is an old technology why would it be put back into a car that has the better vvti motor?
Your always so quick to blast someone, even if your wrong. Was that line to Fish really necessary? Dude, stop being a douche. You just made yourself look like an idiot.

there is more than one form of mass air flow meter. there is the flap style, like older toyota, and hot wire which is what nissan and ford and newer toyotas use, then there is karman vortex which has been used with 1 toyota to my knowledge and many dsm's. and a maf is waaaay better than a map will ever be.
i think you need to take a chill pill. your coming onto a fairly friendly form, and calling people stupid, when they most likely have a much higher education than you or i.
I know that I feel dumb every time I come on here, because most of you guys know so much more than I do. Especially fishexpo... Man, I realize how much I don't know about cars.

everyone starts somewhere. as i once was told along time ago, there is no such thing as a stupid question. if you dont know, ask. more than likely someone will be able to give you a correct answer.
That's true. I just wish I didn't feel stupid asking "non-stupid" questions.
dude, who cares? hell i have been in the scene for years, but every once and a while i still ask questions. you never stop learning. and that goes for life. if someone flames you for asking a "stupid" question, then remember that their the immature one, and prolly flamed because they dont know the answer.
just make sure on forums to search for a similar thread to make sure it wasnt discussed liike a week before.
