Strange Rattle

I have a 2002 Corolla S 5 speed. Once in a while, on a cold start, I hear a random rattle that starts, stops, if I accelerate it might start up again, then stops. After a couple of minutes I don't hear it for the rest of the day. I'm puzzled by this. Any else encounter this?

THanks

Could be a number of possible culprits. The most likely ones are the underbody splash shields or exhaust system heat shield on top of the exhaust manifold.

Could also be a worn serpentine belt tensioner or exceptionally noisy valvetrain. All of these tend to lessen in intensity as the engine warms up.

More information: Cold start, the car has not been put into gear. I just observed something about this rattle/noise. When I depress the clutch it disappears. So is it something to do with the clutch?

probably is something inside the trans or with the clutch. if you just very very lightly put pressure on the clutch, not enough to fully release it, does the sound lessen or go away?

It appears the source of the noise was the new clutch. I did not hear it the past two days. Must have been an uneven surface or something.
