I have a corolla 2001 model with a built in radio and tape. i want to be able to connect my Ipod to the cars stereo system but buying a new radio is a bit over my budget. is it possible to remove the tape and use the tapes cables to create an AUX connection? if so how can i do this?
No, you cannot use a 2.5mm aux cable with the stock radio. If you want to connect your ipod on a low budget, get the cassette with the 2.5mm headphone jack, or you can get one of those things that plugs into your cig lighter. The sound quality will suffer, but you get what you pay for.
If you want to shell out a few more bucks, get an aftermarket head unit. If you spend $130 on a head unit at crutchfield.com, they'll give you all of the installation gear for free (manual, wiring harness, dash kit). Also, a lot of them at that price have ipod controls, or at least an aux jack so you can connect your ipod via 2.5mm headphone cable which can be bought for like $3 anywhere.
If you don't want to install it yourself, you probably know someone who can, or you can spend $50 and have it done.
Trust me, I installed a headunit, front speakers, a sub, and wired two amps in my corolla.

50 dollard and have it done ? 2.5 mm ?
first , headphone jack are 3.5mm
second ... most of us have a friend that can do it , im 16 ans I have plus 4 radios this year ... sometime for nothing , sometime for 10 or 20 $
edit : those cassette to 3.5 adapter cost less than 5 $ on ebay ...
it worth It a lot ... you wont have to change radio , and if you change youre radio , you will still need the adaptor special for the aftermarket headunit that you bought

I used to roll with a tapedeck, then had one of those wireless things that plug into your cig lighter. I definitely suggest the tapedeck (Better sound, cheaper and not as bulky, plus I wanted to be able to use my cupholders still).
A year ago bought a Pioneer DEH-3000IB stereo from bestbuy for about $135 with an Aux port and have been happy ever since. So happy infact that I ended up running 2 tens in the trunk and all new Polk Audio speakers.
I just wouldn't suggest buying anything car audio related from Sony. They make damn good TV's, but not so renowned in the car audio world. And if you're buying an amplifier, go with a digital not analog.
