Hi,
I have that 1999 corolla which eating oil for last 70 000 miles , curent 105000.I don't realy care about this car no more , sick of buying these oils( eating around qt-500 miles) , so lets try to make it unstick somehow.Note engine run pretty good, had some noise between engine and transmision but was air filter not instaled corect and made sucking noises from the throttle body
1)I'm using seafoam in the oil for last 200 miles 1/3 of botlle
2)used seafoam on the top of the pistons over nights last 3 days ( driving little bit in day time)
3)used transmision fluid on the top of the pistols one night ( lot of smoke next morning)
thinking about brake fluid , or even diesel gas of the top of the pistons,
also hear about pepsi to make some magic .
Anybody have any other ideas please responds
Thanks
ps. sorry about my english is not my primary language

Reason: correction
Before you get to far into this - have you verified that you have stuck rings (have to verify first, the major culprits to oil consumption on the 8th gen Corolla is via stuck rings or bad valve seals - need a compression test to verify which one it is). I'll assume that rings are the culprit here - as it is generally the most common for the earlier 8th gens.
One quart every 500 miles is pretty excessive, but there are others that are going through oil much faster. Depending on the condition of the engine internally - might try AutoRx. Worked really well for some people, didn't help with others. Since you've already tried Seafoam and ATF - this might be worth a shot.
Keep in mind that you may already be too far gone to resurrect the engine via additives, might be looking at a rebuild, engine swap, or just cut your losses and sell the car outright. After a certain point, no additive you can safely add will be able to break up and loosen severly stuck rings
thanks,
let me say this , I deducate that car for learning purposes , even if die i WILL take it apart and let you know what happend. I hope this will help to some young kids to save some money if something works.
Good thread.
Be careful when adding fluid directly to cylinder you raise the compression so high that you can blow a gasket or bend things.[HydroLock]
It is usually the oil ring that sticks, so IMO add cleaners/treatments to the crankcase & be patient. This might take a number of 3K Mi. oil changes w/treatments.
PS don't worry about the language thing, my 1st was Baby Jibberish.

Hi,
I usually crank about 2 times for 5 second before install sparkplug , that help to reed of extra fluid . 3000 mile that long ??????????????????
What is that IMO??

tHANKS
IMO= in my opinion
You can change more frequently if you wish. Some posts have suggested 500 mile changes.
If you use Seafoam. which is a serious cleaner you would be wise to change it out even sooner.
Someone with better mechanical knowledge than I, maybe could clarify, yet I thought cranking with plugs removed could harm the igniter.
^^^ Yes, should really pull the EFI fuse before you do that - just like when you do a compression test. Cuts power to the igniter and keeps gasoline from washing down the walls of the cylinder. That will likely result in making the oil consumption worse, as you can potentially increase the wear on the cylinder walls.
Also a good point made of Seafoam and shorter OCI (oil change intervals) - as Seafoam has next to zero lubricating properties. Good solvent, but take is about it.
Other additives like Rislone and Marvel Mystery Oil are also well liked by some. Engine Restore is kit of miss, IMO. BG MOA and BG Quick Clean - are two that are used by many shops (may have to go to a shop or dealership to buy these) - but from what I've heard - really good stuff.
Still, additives will not fix a mechanical problem - they can help address some of the symptoms - but they are a temporary fix at best. Good Luck.
hi,
thanks for replies, well I have little report to make.
Last night I changed oil (850 miles ) look like Seafoam did job , oil really , really dark.I switch to max life protection and this time add bottle of MMO.Also I open valve cover, everything look not bad but one thing notice there is like dark burn oil on the walls next to timing while from exhaust manifold side, so look like I have valves problem as well .

this is true.
In this moment I'm waiting for tester tool to check pressure on the pistons.
Is any of you would share factory repair manual for my 1999
corolla, please PM me .I have that manual for 2004 but is little bit diferent.
I used AutoRx http://www.auto-rx.com/and went from 1qt/1000 to 1qt/3000. I did develop a small oil pan leak at same time but that went away after the "rinse" phase.
OK,
After compression test first one , right after seafoam I had 165,175,170,165 .Pressure raced after adding spoon of oil to 200,185,190,195. I change oil again 900.00 miles as I said before I was on 10-40 oil max Valvoline , quoter MMO and 1/4 of quoter ATF .Car eating less oil 1 quoter in 800 miles now.I notice is running smother and I don't hear any squeaking from valves anymore. My compression improved as well is 180, 185,182,180 on pistons.I opened valve cover as well , I was nicely surprise , everything look much cleaner than before, so MMO and ATF really works.Next step is gas mix 2 cycle oil (left from my trimmer) on the top of pistons for whole day, after that I will try that autorx.
So far engine getting better ......................
Yeah, if the compression jumps like that when you add oil, pretty much a sure sign of stuck/worn piston rings.
Depending on where you live at - try different oil brands. Valvoline MaxLife is recommended by many - might try Pennzoil Platinum or even Walmart's Supertech synthetic - fairly inexpensive and synthetics are known for good solvency (cleans the engine over time).
Don't go too high on the visocity of the oil - an engine will tend to consume oil at a slower rate if you run something like a 10W40 instead of the spec'd 5W30 motor oil. But sometimes that thinner oil can help get help clean out the engine a bit. Rislone added to the crankcase may help as well - used to use that stuff all the time with my older cars - little thicker than MMO (Rislone is close to a 20 weight oil).
