A New Member: Help needed (PIX); A strange tube?

I thank all of you, Toyota drivers, and the Forum mamagers for maintaining this site. Threads on this forum helped me much to fix my car and get to know about automobile better.

Please bear with me, for I am new to the auto-world and all its mechanics under the hood. I am a beginner trying to learn these tubes and cables and dusts and filters, dead spiders and roaches and the rest.

Q: A link to photo is included. What is the valve or opening in the center of the image, or in the square among the # 6,7,10,11? FYI: 12 is the battery and 9 is the LF headlight. I overlapped a layer with number panels to pin-point the object of my and fellow forum users' focus.

Thanks in advance.

Your fellow 98' Corolla driver

Welcome to the forums, and nice to meet you.

that a GREAT way of labeling a picture for us btw.

That is your air intake for your engine, to mix with the gas, to be pushed into the engine to be blown up by the spark plug to provide power.
If you take out your battery, you can see the path that it takes. It goes under your battery, hooks up with a air box in your fender well in a T, then up and into aire box, which houses your air filter. Then goes into your throttle body, which you control with the gas pedal to allow X amount of air in.
