I thank all of you, Toyota drivers, and the Forum mamagers for maintaining this site. Threads on this forum helped me much to fix my car and get to know about automobile better.
Please bear with me, for I am new to the auto-world and all its mechanics under the hood. I am a beginner trying to learn these tubes and cables and dusts and filters, dead spiders and roaches and the rest.
Q: A link to photo is included. Where is the oil filter, the one black cylinder that I can twist with a looping wrench and take out? Is it accessible from the top of this car? Or must I crawl and glue my head on the asphalt to get this oil filter cylinder? This is 98' Corolla VE.
I appreciate if you could reply with numbers, say like "look underneath the space between 3 and 4", for example.
its underneath the car. next to the oil pan. so its none of the above from that picture.
your oil filter sticks STRAIGHT DOWN from the block right behind your lower radiator hose.
my honest recommendation is to get a Haynes manual. its the DIY mechanic's best friend.

If you put a line between 10 and 14, its going to be right down there, underneath the engine. Looks kida like a soda can.
The space between 10 and 14 is the RF of the car, isn't it? Do I still need to lift the car to access the filter. Or, is crawling necessary to untwist the soda can? Again, this is 98' Corolla VE with 1ZZ-FE engine type. Thank you.
The tubes starting at number 10 and going to 11 are part of your intake manifold.
Between those tubes and your radiator there is a empty space. If you look though there, you can kinda see the oil filter.
The best way to see it is to be underneath the car, as if you can find the oil pan, the filter is right near it.
You will have to jack the car up (i use ramps) and get to it that way.
i can squeeze under my corolla to change out the oil and filter. It does make is easier to use ramps or jack it up. Some times I will jack up the car just to raise it up 5-6 inches just to make it easier to get under. I dont jack the wheels off the ground, just take the weight off the wheels

possibly, but I dont see how the car would come down and crush me. When I am under the car without the aid of the jack I can turn my head and stuff so I have some room so i dont see how it could happen even if the jack failed, the car will only go so far down before the shocks would bottom out , the wheels are not off the ground so it is not like it is falling 3 stories and slamming to the ground.
I used my dremel and some other tools after my first oil change and removed some of the black plastic pieces under and around the oil filter so i wasn't grinding my wrists into it every time trying to get to the filter.
But I see your point.

nor will your face... as for the struts and springs catching the car in time... unless you have aftermarket coilovers with max damping settings then your struts will still compress some. and a fully bottomed out stock strut almost drags the front bumper (mine are blown so i'm speaking from personal experience. and mine are the original OEM struts with DENSO stamped right on the strut body)

Ok well I appreciate the concern all but the weight of the car jacked up maybe 4 inches to make it a little easier to get my hand etc, under there, I will take my chances. Thanks

I know how to use a jack and jack stands. I use jack stands when I am doing maintenance or will be 'under' the car. I will continue to take the weight off the wheels by a few inches without raising the wheels.
Take care

If you go and look at the last time I posted on here until these last few days, it was because I was recovering from the car slamming down on me from having the weight of the car jacked up by 4 inches to make it a little easier for me to get under. My Pelvis was impalled into the ground for 5 hours before help arrived because the jack let go and the car settled down about 5 inches cause it was raised up 4 so the weight just was unbelievable.
Ok I will try to explain this so you can under stand it. When I did my very first oil change at 500 miles ( i am a believer in early oil changes, if you want to start another thread on disadvatages of early oil changes to get the wear metals out, however minimal with todays clearances and tolerances I would be more than happy to debate that with you too) I could not get the oil filter off for the life of me. I used 2 oil filter wrenches, a strap wrench, nothing could get this off. A gorilla must have screwed it on at the factory cause I could not get that off. At this time I did not have a jack or jackstands and the plastic shroud or whatever it is was in 'my' way and trying to turn the filter wrench and get some leverage my wrists were being dug into the plastic shroud. I said "Fuck This" I am not going to have to deal with this every single oil change, so I got my dremel out, and cut out a section of the shroud (again, if you want to start another debate about why I should not have done that either, feel free to start a different thread) so now I dont have to worry about digging my wrist into it any more.
I got a jack/jack stands from auto zone. jacked it up so I could get under there, used the trusted hammer and screwdriver to get the filter off. (If you want to start a thread on how using the hammer/screwdriver to get the filter off and debate this, start a thread.)And now I use the jack to raise the car several inches up to make it easier for me to get under there.
And my 1992 Camry was the easiest to do filter changes on, open the hood and the filter is right there looking at you, bottom up.
Any more questions on why I do what I want to do?
