Your car is becoming a prime project car candidate.

The 4spd transmission itself will bolt right in, but a number of other things have to change. Your engine wire harness have one additional plug and the plug going to the transmission is shaped differently. Because the 4spd is shifted electronically by the engine computer, that has to change as well. the 4spd shifter has an extra button to control the 4th gear ("overddrive") and an additional bulb goes in the dash for its status. Finally the rear transmission mount is different.
I have many of these ancilliary parts for sale, even that tranny mount.

Of course I have to throw "manual swap" out there too.

Cost wise, a few hundred bucks at least, mostly depending on how much you can source that transmission for, and labor.

Good luck.

If my tranny ever broke ... I would do a manual swap. just because i need to learn. Why not learn it on a corolla?

Before we bought our used 99 VE w/144k on it, I asked the local tranny rebuilder that's been in business for 20+years with regards to the Toyota's automatic tranny reliability and he said he's never seen the inside of a Toyota transmission. Someone/thing really must've done a number on yours. The plus side of htat is that with perceived demad for them being so low, a used one at the bone yard should be pretty reasonable.
