98 Corolla ignition cylinder stuck...any ideas ?

Guys,

I have a 1998 corolla, that has a jammed ignition cylinder. I am only able to unlock the steering wheel, besides that, it wont move to anything, ACC or anything else. Is this a common issue ? How can i remove the cylinder and replace it ?

Any help would be appreciated !

Have you tried another key? If another key works, have a new key cut (see below). But that also means the cylinder has enough play to allow a bad key to unlock the wheel which is equally bad.

To replace the cylinder you need to take apart enough of the steering column until it is completely exposed. Once exposed, the FSM says to "turn key to ACC position" (it's stuck and you can't!), push in a stop pin (on the under side) and pull the cylinder out. I guess you just have to try pushing the pin anyway and figure out how to pull it - normally the key is your handle. Also try removing the big ignition switch and pop it from that end.

If you have the vehicle ownership paperwork or if you bought the car new, check them for a key code. Take that key code to a dealer and order a new cylinder. You can also get a new key made using that code.

if you can't turn the key then it has to be broken off flush and then the lock cylinder drilled out.

Well,

The key goes in and out easy, but cant turn, except to unlock steering wheel.
This happend 2 years ago where the key actually got stuck in there, and the tumbler was taken out and fixed, and it worked fine. I think im gonna get a new one from the junk yard or something lol
