Just sold my 240 about 2 weeks ago now been lookin for a car. came across a 2001 corolla LE with
115k miles
original owners
white w/ tan int
clean title
auto
pw, pl
good condition all around, interior is mint, ext has a little some rust on the front of the hood
everything works
paying $4200
Just wondering if there is any in particular about these cars i should be weary about that i should investigate further before buying.
Also been looking at clean tasteful mods for it been thinking:
5000k HID
black housing headlights
remote start/keyless entry
Maybe some clean looking rims (not chrome)
Which brings me to my next question:
I've searched and cant see to come up with a picture of an 8th gen corolla with the black headlight housings. If anyone can post a pic or tell me how it looks i would appreciate it.
I believe Mattavelli also has(had?) the blackhousing headlights plus a lot of mods on his car, you might want to look up his pictures here.
The 8th gens with the first 1ZZFE motors were prone to oil burning, not sure how the 2000-02 motors are, but I thought they had improved or fixed this by then.
you know in all honesty, you could get an audi a4 for about the same price (2000) quatro wheel drive, just throwing that out there, much more fun then a corolla
lol yea i looked at those...i need something now though, driving a truck now and getting about 12 to the gallon.
Just my personal preference but AWD=2 drivetrains=more moving parts and more likely something is gonna break.
So the 8th gen has 2 slightly different engines and bodies between 99 and 00?
im pretty sure the 99 had vvti also. So the engines are the same from 99-02, in 03 is when they stopped cheaping out on piston size and finally made some with tighter clearances with the cylinder walls, at least im pretty sure it was 03.(the undersized pistons of the 98-2002 is what causes the oil burn which u will not see out the tailpipe unless its really bad) But the bodies are different, same wheelbase and stuff but the front has a facelift in 2001, looks way better IMO, also the tailights have circular reverse lights as opposed to rectangular ones in the 98-00

very good info much appreciated. should have the car by tomorrow evening. quite excited.
what part is it that causes the engine to burn oil? in other words how can i fix it if it happens? lol
VVT-i is only on the 2000+ Corollas sold in North American markets. 1998 and 1999 Corollas were equipped with 1ZZ-FE without the variable valve timing. 2000+ is also when they switched from a separate IAT (intake air temperature sensor) and MAP (manifold absolute pressure sensor), to a combined IAT and MAF (mass air flow sensor) to coincide with VVT-i operation.
Quick way, is to pop open the hood and see if the black plastic engine cover says VVT-i on it. Otherwise, you'll have to pull the valve cover off and note if the VVT-i actuator is on the end of the camshaft.
Oil consumption varies from car to car - some don't drink a drop of oil, some guzzle it. Usually, it is centered about "stuck" piston rings or leaky valve seals. The key is not to get to that point, but can be difficult to assess. Some cars with no history of oil consumption and start out of no where - some just keep on trucking with no problems at all. If you stay ontop of oil change intervals and pull oil samples for periodic UOAs and pick the appropriate motor oil for its intended use (synthetic, blends, convention, etc.) Should have no problems with the car.
