Whenever i step on the gas to accel or into reverse...and i step the pedal nicely and slowly so it moves slowly with th rpm rising slowly too and why is that there is a rattling noise like something isn't tighten enough and sometimes i feel like its coming from the front of the engine or somewhere in the rear?Or is it that all 98-02 corolla have that noisy sound when accelerating?
What i thought was that it was maybe the muffler or pipe below rattling or so?
Could be an exhaust leak from one of the exhaust donuts that seal separate sections of the exhaust system. Check the joints between the exhaust components, see if you note any carbon deposits. Pretty common to have those donuts be almost completely disintegrated on this generation. Just from normal movement in the drivetrain and from just age.
A common problem is the belt tensioner wearing out (shock looking thing goes bad). It usually sounds like a rumble, grungle marbly sound when you first hit the gas. Ok, I made some words up but that's what it sounds like. After it's up in RPM's you don't hear it.
Prices range from $50-150 depending on where you get. For a photo go to Rockauto.com and check for your year. It's listed under BELT DRIVE then BELT TENSIONER
Changing isn't that hard. Remove belt, remove a bolt or two (one is VERY long), put on new one, replace belt. It's probably a good time to put a new belt on while you have it off.
If I had a video camera and the money to replace the one on my girlfriends 99 I would record and post the process but I don't. lol
I don't think it'll cause any problems if you don't replace it, just might cut gas mileage and power down a little.

Is it the tensioner for the timming belt that needs to be replaced?
You originally said you had a rattle somewhere. You thought it could be exhaust related. I mentioned that sometimes owners hear a noise and sometimes think it's exhaust. You might be spending months trying to find the exhaust noise and it might end up being the tensioner. I'm just trying to be helpful by saying that.
And whenever I get a hold of a decent video camera and some bucks to change my girlfriends tensioner I'm going to record it and post it.
alfaffa - what I'm talking about has nothing to do with the timing. Timing is internal. Tensioner and belt are external.

ilovecorollale - Sorry, but my car seems to have the same symptons, but the exaust system is just fine
gaj1967 - Ok, im just asking becuase i also got i rattling sound in my car, and i still havent been able to locate the rattling. But it sounds like its comming from the right side of the engine some where, and also it raises with the rpm.
Is there any way to make sure that the tensioner is actualy bad before i take it all appart?

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but I think you can remove the belt and run the engine for a minute to see if the noise remains.
I found out the problem by opening the hood, running the engine and revving it by hand while listening for the sound. Decent ears can locate the sound source.
You might also be able to see the tensioner bouncing a lot.

I just replaced my belt tensioner, problem not solved; the rattling-vibration still there!
I also replaced the worn motor mounts...
What it could be?
Could be anything. See if you can get it to rattle while parked so you can poke around looking for it.

Smooth driving is comfortable and easy. It is also FAST(though not comfortable at speed). I don't care if you apex corners(everyone does) on a public road unless you suck at it(everyone). Hold a proper line or get out of my way.
Thanks for the reply,

With the car parked (the car iddles ''perfect'') I only can get the vibration-noise while giving gas and depressing the pedal, then goes away at higher rpms; it sounds like a ''vaccum leak'' coming from the engine by the firewall. I have noticed some oil spots by the VALVE COVER, so I'm suspecting a bad VALVE COVER GASKET?
The rattling noise only occurs while upgoing a hill or driving in low gears.
Rattle, tick and vibration can mean different things. A rattle/knocking sound can mean a bearing somewhere, a tick can be something with the vvt. A vibration that shakes the interior with no engine noise can be a motor mount. Without a video its hard to diagnose over the internet. Is the noise near the serp belt? middle of engine? What type/weight oil are you using?

I found this video on youtube, the diference is I only get the rattle sound GOING UP A HILL or in low gears, for example: when accelerating entering the freeway, then the noise goes at 55-60mph...
The ''vibration noise'' seen to come from middle of the engine close to the firewall, exactly betwen valve cover and exhaust manifold (wich I also replaced exhaust flange gasket and bolt/spring).
I'm using Castrol GTX High Mileage, SAE 5W-30 and 5W-40; I mix them
My Corolla is a 2000 VE.
