That said, my 98 Corolla manual transmission has been acting up. Sometimes it is squishy and sometimes when the engine is cold it just is damn ornery and doesn't want to shift. The other day I couldn't go from first to reverse without killing the engine but now it seems fine. Before I go to a mechanic, I wanted to check the level of transmission fluid thinking that it might be the problem. Trouble is, where the devil is the place to check? I know where to check the oil but beyond that and knowing where to refill the windshield wiper fluid I am lost.
Any help as to where this thing is located? Thanks.

there is a plug on the front side (radiator side) of the transmission. its about half way up the transmission. you need to pull this plug out, and see if fluid comes out, if not, stick your finger in there and check how low it is, to the best of you ability.
to remove the plug you will need a 1/2in ratchet or breaker bar, and a short extention. it will almost snap into the hole in the plug, then just break it loose and back it out. just make sure to tighten it down when you put it back in, dont want it falling out while driving. lol.
