Does power windows work without the key in the ignition or not?

No.

Now some Toyotas will give you a five second "grace period" that allows you to close the windows right after you shut off the ignition, but other than that the power windows will not work unless the ignition in on.

I see. Does anyone know what drawbacks there would be if I made my power windows be able to work with the ignition ON or OFF? I think this would be more of a convinence to be able to open/close your windows whenever just like manual windows.

you window motor might not get enough power and the windows would roll up/down slower with the car off. I always noticed that. Also, try rolling up all 4 windows at the same time with the car on...slow, isn't it!
