99 Corolla front heater/defroster blower

Hi All- The front heater blower on my '99 Corolla has gone out just in time for the 'nice' weather. Doesn't work on any speed (low-hi)., but I'm still getting heat so it doesn't appear to be thermostat related. I've also checked fuses (good) and other posts on this site but still have a few questions. Is this usually the blower motor assembly? Resistor? Fan switch contact issue? Can someone tell me where the motor and resistor are located so I can check? Thanks for the help!!

Both are essentially behind the glove box. Have to pull the lower cowl finish panel (passenger side side kick plate) and the lower finish panel (basically the glove box). There are a number of screws that are holding them - don't remember off the top of my head how many, but remove the screws and tug on the parts until they pull off. You should not have to yank anything off with superhuman strength - if it acts that way, you've missed a screw somewhere.

ok i'm confused.
so the rear defrost doesn't work? mine has the thin heating element running through the glass and seems to do some good on a cold morning (not great but enough to see). And I just checked my Haynes and it gives specific instructions on how to check and make sure that it's working.

am i failing to catch some sarcasum or what?

I think they're talking about a defroster with a fan maybe? Like on the front... it uses a fan to defrost the window.

yeah whatever being said above is all true....i mean the 8th doesn't have a rear defroster but has a button made for it even though it has those thin heating element across the rear window.

But hey....what if you wanted to have a rear defroster fan or so????how do you do it and where is it going to be install?
Let me guess...go to the manufacturer?

Angry i'm sorry mod if i upset you

ok mod, fair warning. rant coming. i'm kinda drunk off the saints win 17-38 baby!

my 98 corolla has WORKING rear defrost. has a button and heating elements in the back glass and they work. I don't know where you guys got that 8th gen didn't have rear defrost but that is just plain wrong.

why would it have a button for it and it not work? seriously?

fishexpo, you seem like a pretty well read gentleman, and you have far more posts than me, please explain to these guys.

no you don't put a "blower" in the rear. I mean really? my girlfriend drives an IS 250 and her's is just like mine. heating elements in the glass. I have never heard of a blower in the back. I'm willing to be wrong but show me an example.

I had a 1968 Full size Chev in the past & it had a blower for the rear window. It was in the rear deck just behind the rear seats. All it did was blow recirculated air from the passenger compartment to help defrost the rear window. Worked like crap in -40 below, but did work after a long time, like 1-2 hours.

just an update, I pulled out the old blower motor, applied 12V and got nothing, so I went ahead and replaced the motor Saturday night and it's been working ever since. Seems strange that it didn't degrade over time but just stopped working all of a sudden. Wondering if that means there's another problem still. Anyway, back to having heat/defrosters for time being.

On the rear defroster, mine just has the thin heating element in the back windshield and a button at console to turn on/off. No rear blower motor. Didn't mean to indicate that there was no rear defroster at all.

thanks for the help!

So it means that that button for the rear defroster, when u push it it activates the heating line element along the back windshield so it warms up?Correct?

Besides that button is not for a blower in the rear window?

yeah, that is what it does.
heats up the back glass and defrosts the window. there is no "blower" for the rear.

There was no option for a read blower defroster.

The button just turns on the heating elements that are glued/bonded to the glass on the inside of the car. They heat up, melting what every is on the other side.

The defroster will turn off either after a certian time period, or temp reached. Im not to sure.

Just to put this out there - yes the defroster will melt ice/snow. But if there is any accumlination, just clean the window before driving and be safe.
