Changed Battery - Honking does not stop :(

Hi,
How are you guys?

I changed the battery in my Toyota Corolla 2001 today. As soon as I connected my negative terminal, it started honking and it never stopped. There is a red button near the steering wheel, I pressed that. No luck. Only way to stop the honking is by removing one of the terminals in the battery.

I never used it's security lock or any thing. I use the typical key (not the one with switches or any thing), so i never knew there was a factory security system. Looks like it does have one. I am not sure how can I stop the honking and get the car started. Any help is much appreciated.

Thanking everyone in advance.

- Shiyam

Sounds like it has some sort of alarm system - as the factory installed one doesn't have a red button near the steering wheel and uses a key fob, this sounds like an aftermarket installation.

You'll have to find some way to reset or bypass the alarm - that will require knowledge of what system you have. Even if you just disconnect the horn, temporarily, it is likely this system also has a starter kill (car may or may not startup, if it does may not run for long).

Try and look for a control box somewhere in and around the cabin (under the seats, under the dash, inside the engine bay, etc.) Once you find out what system is in there, then you can find out how to turn it off.

Thanks fishexpo101

Thanks fishexpo101..
I found the keyfob with those unlock and lock buttons. Since I never used that key before, its not working. Either it does not have batteries or the battery has died.

Is it worth replacing the battery and try to unlock from the key?

Thanks again!

Yup, those little batteries are cheaper than trying to take it in to be diagnosed, or to disable the alarm system.

Had an old Rolla w/aftermarket alarm, I believe you hold that red button as you attach the cables, keep holding button till horn shuts off.

Thanks guys

ok. Great. I will try keep pressing the red light a little longer than I tried already; If it does not work, i will replace the battery and try unlocking.

If those two don't work, i will try to find the control box. I have no idea how to do that. I will come back to this forum again if i can't figure it out.

thanks both of you.

Shiyam Not the red light, there should be a push button or switch mounted on the lower part of the dash [leg area] you may have have to get down on your knees with the door open to see it.
