I found out that on the non vvti 1zzfe if you remove the valve buckets you have to re adjust them...like match the right ones to the valves, heres how and this is straight out of the official toyota mechanics book:
You need a feeler guage to measure the distance between the top of the bucket and the bottom of the camshaft lobe, on intake side they must be 8 thou of an inch and 12 thou on exhaust side, any less is not good-goes for both sides.
I kept my caps in the same place and grounded the valves tops down to meet the specs. I wasn't lucky enough to be able to switch them all around, ran out of the thicker ones.
It's in the first post here. There are some pics, but I had the cam in snug and dry fit the valves, using a feeler gauge to find the clearance. Then threw the valve in the mill. Mill, measure, re-check. Tedious work.
my harmonic balancer fell off while driving 2 blocks from my house on a very cold day lol.. bent all exhaust valves, i had 16 spare valves from the same engine but with VVTI, i found out that the valves are longer than mine and when i put the cams on all of my valves are open and i have no compression... im just going to get another head that matches my non vvti engine and ill be on my way.
Oh wow...
I do recommend you have the head checked out. Pressure tested, vated, new valve seals, check valve clearances and resurface.Maybe even a valve grind if neccessary.
the head itself is fine, the only problem is, i have longer valves. The buckets i have match the valves(both valves and buckets came out of a VVTI 1zzfe) my head is a non vvti head which had shorter valve stems and different bucket sizes. im just going to get a head that matches, it will have valves, buckets and all that stuff already set up, all i have to do is drop it on my block and hook it up, put the cams on and start it up. It will be fine
