I have a automatic transmission and can't get the gear shift button to go in and release the shifter to go to drive.The button pushes in but does not engage to release the shaft handle to be move.How can I fix this?

A number of things.

First check your brake light. If the brake light switch fail, this will happen.
Pop the plastic piece on top of "P" on the lever and press it. Can you now shift it off P?
Can you press the button all the way in or it just goes in a little and not any further?

On mine, the button would stick, so like it would go in but then not come out. It suddenly started working again though.
