powered locks problem

I have powered locks with keyless entry. Whenever I try locking the doors with my remote, the locks sometimes doesn't go all the way down and you can still open the door. What would cause this? a weak motor? do i need to grease something? A fuse?

When you hit the lock button on the remote - do you see the door locks physically moving? You mentioned "sometimes" - any pattern to when they seem to stick on you - when the weather is colder, right after it rains, if the car sat for a while, etc? Any door that seems to be giving you more trouble than the others? If you lock the doors with the key or from the inside of the panel - do the lock "always" work, or do they work intermittently as well?

If it is doing this, regardless of how you lock the doors, could be the servo sticking, bad wiring running to the servo (not getting full power), battery is a little weak, intermittent contact or damaged (usually weather related), or could need to lube the latching mechanism. The servos themselves generally don't need to be lubed up. But if an excessive amount of moisture got inside the door, could cause some issues with the connectors.

If this only happens with the remote - then there is a chance the signal line from the keyless entry brain is messed up (too low of a voltage level) or the brain is losing power. I assume you already checked the battery in the remote - if too weak, your transmission distance will drop and the "brain" might not respond to the remote commands (signal weak or garbled).

There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason when it does come all the way down or only half way. However, it does seem to only go down half way more often than it goes down all the way.

I believe this is also the case when i hit the lock button from the switch on the door as well. I can't confirm right now as my car is in the shop getting an alignment.

the servos are located in the actual doors? is only way to get to them is to pull of the panel? How can i check if it's a weak battery or insufficient power getting to the servos? The radio/lights/etc are fine.

like Fish said first you need to isolate if this is a remote control issue or a power locks issue. try the locks from inside the car. Try the individual door locks . if the locks seem to work fine check your remote battery.

To get at the solenoids - you will need to pull off the interior door panel. Same with checking the wiring, much of the wiring is hidden behind the inner door panel. Don't forget to check the bundle leaving the door itself - lots of times, a wire will break / otherwise get damaged right there, as that portion is flexed everytime you open and close the door.

You need to pull the battery or load test it - just because some accessories work, doesn't mean the battery is still OK. Need to wait until you get your car back to do some diagnostic work. Right now, could be a number of things that could be causing it. First need to eliminate potential culprits and isolate the issue to help point you in the right direction.

I have tested the locks and they consistently go down only half way when i use the button on the door (not the remote). What does this mean? it means that after pushing the lock button, and the locks go down, i can manually push it down even further. It also means that sometimes, i can open the door even when it's 'locked'.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I will pull off one of the door panels and see what might have caused the problem. Do you have any suggestions on a lubricant i can use? or is just any mechanical oil fine?

How would i load test the battery? it may be the battery since it is a 99 corolla and i don't think the battery has ever been changed. How long should they last?
