According to the EPA, the 1999 Chevy Prizm is rated at 29/34 for the manual transmission car. In 2001 the number jumps to 31/37, which is a significant jump in fuel economy.

Were there any changes between 1999 and 2001, or did the EPA just test the cars differently? I'm looking at a 1999 car, but if I can get 3mpg more with a 2001 then I will look for that.

I believe that is the year they added VVTI.

I find those number off myself.

When im really trying to get some good gas mileage, I have gotten 42 on the highway.

But I usually get around 30ish MPG during city driving. (and my playing around)

The EPA revised their testing methods in 2006, they applied the changes retroactively for older model cars.

Early model Corollas of that generation were prone to oil burning problems. I would definitely look for a newer 2001 or even 2002 car.

added VVTI and went to a MAFS instead of MAP for airflow metering i think.
