Thumbs down 2001 Toyota Corolla failed inspection - help!

I had to get my Corolla inspected at the end of November and after waiting for around 2 hours, I found out it failed for emissions, and the codes that were "present" are P0171, P0446, and P1349. I had 45 days from then to get it inspected again, so I have a few weeks before I have to bring it back. Has anyone had these codes before? Is there any way I could fix them myself without biting a huge bill at the garage? If not, how much should I be prepared to pay? Thanks!

Did you do a google search to see what the codes mean? that could give you a better idea of "how much" it will probably cost.

Yeah, and for most of them they have a few solutions for fixing them, and I'm not really a car person so I don't really know prices. :P

My CEL isn't on though, should it be if that's the problem? I took it to a garage and they only had time to take a "quick look", and they kept insisting that the CEL should be on and I showed them that it wasn't. I asked for an estimate and they said "Anywhere from $100-$500" - is there any way I can get an extension on the inspection date?

In which case they should have also documented that failure-- it's part of the emissions test to see if the light itself comes on when the key is first turned to the "run" position.

Did you take it to a Toyota Dealer? They should be able to tell you what the codes mean.

Yikes! I haven't checked this in a little while, I've been busy. I have an update on the car - so I took it to the garage and they cleared the codes out and reset the system. They said to drive 100 miles and come back, and everything should be working. I ended up putting around 250 miles on it and brought it back, but now the error codes are gone and the system still hasn't reset itself so I can't get it re-inspected yet. I took it back to the garage yesterday, and he said put 100 more miles on it then bring it back. Is there anything I have to do in those 100 miles to make it reset, or is it just one of those things that can take a while? Because right now the way I'm doing it seems like it's a waste of mileage and money. Another thing is that my CEL isn't on, and the garages I've brought it to seem surprised by that (not sure if that's in a good or bad way) - I wish I knew how to work on cars. :P

Just to clarify: Does the CEL come on when you first turn the key from the "Off" to the "Run" position (without starting the engine)? If it does not, the problem is almost certainly the bulb, and explains how you can have codes without seeing the light.

Again, part of the emissions test is to verify the light is operation of the CEL, so that people just don't disable the light in an effort to fool the inspector.

Yes, when I turn the key the check engine light comes on, so the bulb is working for that.

The failure may be in the ECU, then-- if it's 'coding' but not lighting the lamp. However, testing for that would require an ECU swap, I'd expect.

It is possible to have codes stored in the computer and the check engine light NOT ON. These are PENDING codes which have not matured enough to turn on the light. Also, if the light did turn on and you didn't notice it and then the condition rectified itself, the light would go off but the codes still remain in memory.

A simple test would be to remove the vacuum line going to the EGR valve and drive the car to see if the check engine light comes on. With the vacuum line disconnected, this will only take a few miles.
