Hi, I have a 98 Corolla. Whenever I shift gears into reverse and let it idle, I hear a fairly loud rattling sound coming from the engine area. When I give it some gas and start reversing, the rattling stops. It does not happen at all when I'm idling in drive.
Previously to this sound, I often heard a slight rattling sound while driving at highway speeds and over large bumps. It's coming from the same area, so I think they're related. Also, last night, the weather was really bad and I had to drive through some fairly deep water, and also over rough, icy ground. I also had to seriously rev the engine while trying to back out of a parking space. I think it's very likely that this stress has aggravated the problem.
I did some investigating on the internet and I think it's a loose exhaust heat shield. I'm gonna stick my head under there and have a look, but I'm not sure what it will look like, or where exactly to find it.
Just wondering if you guys have any ideas on what else it could be, or any pointers on how to check the shield. I know very little about cars, but I'm learning,

.
Thanks
