First question is, what do you want to do with it? Are you going for looks? Performance? A little of both? What is your budget like?

Modding just for the sake of modding is really not a good idea. And trying to do it on the Cheap usually ends up in disaster. Or a really Ricey looking car.

First come up with a plan, and then go from there.

update on modify

budget to start is $1,000. would like to add a little spunk to the motor, it is an automatic, then concentrate on the looks (body just seems too plain). has regular wheel covers and spoiler right now, color is black.

well go to tirerack pick out a tire/wheel set. that will probably axe half that if you get good tires. then maybe a intake thats 100 some HID's (idk on the avg price) rest could go to a suspension drop. thats what i'd do with 1k

I'd start with wheels and tires. That's the easiest way to give you an appearance upgrade. The problem you are going to face is that there is not a lot of performance upgrades for the 1ZZ-FE motor that are easy to do. The only intakes that are available are short-rams, and the filters sit right over the exhaust manifold and do nothing but suck hot air. You might have some success with a decent cat-back exhaust, but otherwise you will have to spend some big bucks like turbocharging. And that will take a lot of customizing to make happen.

Good luck.

Agreed with the intake. I subbed mine out for a screen itb style

You will go a long way with saving money if you do the work yourself, which usually requires the right tools.

Instead of buying a Short Ram air intake I built my own Cold Air Intake (CAI).
I have a 1999 model with a MAP sensor, if your car has a MAF sensor then you will have to follow another guide/procedure for making a custom intake. And don't rush into any modding. Have a plan laid out.
Search the forum a bit more and you will find numerous guides of people putting on CAIs, Exhaust, Suspension, Exterior etc...

Took out the stock air box and the resonator box(located inside the fender).

Cut a bigger hole in the metal for the CAI to fit.

Connected 2 pipes together to a K&N cone filter from AutoZone($50 lasts lifetime). Messed around until I got the angles right so that there's enough space for the battery to fit in.

Made sure everything was holding tight and in the right place. Then bored a small hole to connect the Intake Temp. Sensor. You can use the grommet from the stock air box to fit the sensor in. And connected the fuel evap line (whatever it is) through another hole. Took a little bit of customizing.

The filter sits in the fender and sucks in Cold Air.

And "Voila"!!!

Thanks for info. Looking for wheels and checking out other suggestions you gave me.

Don't want to sound stupid, but could you explain your version a little more, did you remove anything? I've worked on many a muscle car, but this is a little different and so far looks like a lot of fun.
