I fixed it! And pictures.

So about three months ago I replaced some bulbs in my car, and in doing so, I blew my integration relay. It's about a $400 part from the dealer. I found one last week, on eBay for $35. Anyway, it took me about an hour, but I fixed it yesterday. I removed my lower dash and fusebox, and swapped out the relay. Now it works like a charm.

I'm going to explain step by step how to do the entire thing. And if you decide to do it, be smarter than me and unplug your battery first. Sorry for the picture quality, and hopefully imageshack works ok.

Here's an overview of what it looks like:

These are the HVAC controls:

You'll need to remove your radio for this one. It's either two or four screws and slides right out. Directly below you can feel the bulb sockets, twist out and replace. I used two #74 bulbs with 3 LEDs mounted on each one. I got all my bulbs from http://www.autolumination.com/

Next up is the gauges:

I also installed reverse indiglo gauges. This is easy as well. Unscrew the black bezel around your gauge cluster. Pull that out. Unscrew gauge cluster (two screws, one each side.) The bulbs are in three sockets that twist out easily. I used three 194 bulbs. I used the "5 LED WEDGE MATRIX." It has four side LEDs and one main one. It eliminated all the 'hot spots' I got from other bulbs that didn't give wide enough coverage.

Here's my driver's side foot well and the ashtray:

I wired a universal LED to my ignition light (this is how I blew my relay) and down to the foot well. Now that light goes on and off with my ignition light (when doors open or alarm is turned off) and they fade off after door closes, car is started or alarm is activated. This feature looks awesome at night, especially when someone's getting in or out of your car. They'll be impressed. The ashtray light is easy. Remove your ashtray and pull out on the lower part of the trim around it. The bulb socket twists out. I used one #74 LED with three LEDs mounted. I also filled my ashtray with blue potpourri stones. It really glows at night.

This is the rear defroster button:

This one is a bitch. I could not find a bulb that was a replacement for this part. It's a tiny little bulb that's mounted in a tiny little socket. I've found close relatives, but never a match. First, pry off the trim around your clock, stereo, etc. There's two slots on the bottom that work perfect for a flat head screwdriver. Second, pop the defroster button out. Untwist the socket from the button. I used a universal LED on a wire lead. I jammed the LED into the empty hole, left by the socket. Then wired it back into the plug/harness that the defroster plugs into. This one really sucks. Only in really dark conditions, is it visible. Hopefully someone else can find a better way to do this, or I can find a better, smaller, brighter, LED.

Here's my automatic shifter:

First, unbolt your middle console, there's a bolt down in the compartment. There's two screws on either side and it slides backwards and out. Feel around under the shifter and twist out the socket and bulb. This is a single 74 bulb. In my pictures I used a single LED bulb.

Cigarette lighter ring:

Follow the same steps as the ashtray. Unclip the socket from the cigarette adapter. You'll need to use a universal LED like I did for the rear defroster. Wire into the socket you unplugged the plug from. This one looks decent, because you can push the LED down as far as you need. Unfortunately it tends to shift over time, so I find myself repositioning it a couple times a year.

Ignition light:

This one's kind of a pain. And be sure to unplug your battery first. First take the three screws off your steering column. It pulls down and out and off. Then, just twist the socket base off. This is a 74 bulb. Do not use the 'matrix' or multi-LED bulbs for this application. The matrix bulbs have two contacts on each side and will short out because the socket also has two contacts. Also, the socket is a weird size. I think it's just slight too large for a true 74. The matrix will be too loose and rattle around, eventually shorting out. I used a single LED 74. It definitely gives enough light. It's too long, however, so when you put the socket base back in, you won't be able to twist and lock, but it won't come out.

I also replaced my dome light a the DE3175 31mm 4 LED bulb. It's a bit too long, but you can angle it in. Mine usually die after 6 or so months. They cold solder them, so they aren't the best quality.

All in all, I'm pretty happy with the application, overall. I have three things I want to update: swap my shifter out to a 3 LED matrix bulb, find a better bulb for the rear defroster and cigarette lighter. I fashioned my own two LEDs that I may try to install at a later date:

This is the rear defroster. The top one is the original part. I used an empty base and installed my own LED. As long as the LED fits into the button, it should work.

This is for the cigarette adapter:

This should work perfectly, as long as I wired it properly. I had to break the original bulb and pull out all the pieces of glass and wiring.

Here's a break down of all necessary parts:

Dome (DE)3175 31mm x 1
Gauges: 194 matrix 5 LED bulbs x 3
Climate control knobs: 74 3 matrix bulbs x 2
Ashtray 74 3 matrix bulb x 1
Ignition 74 single LED bulb x 1
Shifter 74 3 matrix bulb x 1
Cigarette lighter Universal LED bulb x 1
Rear defroster Universal LED bulb x 1
Footwells universal LED bulb x 2

Total:
Dome x 1
194 matrix 5 LED bulbs x 3
74 3 matrix bulbs x 4
74 single LED bulb x 1
Universal LED bulb x 4

bonus points for getting the ignition key light ring thing bob finished. it all looks really great!

hvac lighting looks nice and consistent too. its especially a good pic for those who were wondering whether or not the blue lights will mess up the red heater decal and make it purpleish...well it does but i like it nevertheless

you mentioned you got a dome light, but i couldnt find whether or not it was colored. i grabbed a blue 31 hp led festoon from superbrightleds and its REALLY bright. love it. some pics somewhere on here lol
great thread. if i were you id definitely make a direct copy of this and post it up in the sticky FAQ thread...even though some may totally bypass it for the "post new thread" button.

Dome light is blue, with 4 LEDs. It is fairly bright, but it burns out all the time.

I'm all over the OC, because I work in LA and my business has me on the road 5 days a week.

if you don't replace the lights for those reminders, they won't change. If you want to make them LED, you would put red LEDs behind there. Like mine:

hey, I got my LEDs from Autolumination.com. The larger LEDs are 194 type, and the smaller are 74 (if you didn't know).

Here's a pic of the bulbs (to help you find the ones I got on autolumination.com):

My 194 bulbs were $5.99 each (a nice blue, not to light/green, or too dark/purple)

but you need 74 for the seat belt light etc. I got this kind for $3.99 (it is a very dark blue with some violet)

you can see that the majority of the bulbs are these $2.99 kind (these match the 194 bulbs I got, the just-right blue)

you'd get the red version for $2.99 each like I got. LEDs only work when installed one direction, so if it doesn't light, you take it out and spin it 180 degrees.

If you have a green lens, and you want it to light up, get the $3.99 bulbs (the blue-violet ones). If you want a yellow reminder to light up red, the $2.99 will work. I am happy with my results

The integration relay handles small electronic jobs that need done, key cylinder and fading dome light and the likes etc...More of a control board then a relay, but certain there is a reason for the term used.

And also... 237500 miles is that all ?? did you just buy it ?? Great job, I hope it last another 237k for you.

I also noticed 237k miles. I just got my CE with 125k miles on it and I hope it lasts as long as yours. Any major repairs yet?
