I am totally new to this car stuff. I want to change my shifter on my 1999 automatic. I have been doing some searches on the internet and noticed that there are ones suitable with overdrive, and ones that do not support overdrive they say.
Now I have some questions for you guys:
1) Will any aftermarket automatic shifters fit my Corolla?
2) Seeing how my Corolla has overdrive, would I still be able to fit a shifter that does not support overdrive? Or do I strictly have to go with the ones that do support overdrive?
i got a shift boot and new shifter knob to replace that doofy AT knob that comes with the rolla. Now it kinda looks like a stick shift. As for the OD button, i cut the wire, added some wire, and hooked a switch up to it.

Reason: adding picture
^ that awesome. So you can turn the OD off and on with a switch? I'm planing on doing something like this to my car
Yup. I got a little toggle switch to turn it on/off. But for whatever reason it requires two flicks to turn the OD on or off. Its wierd, but it works. And its easy to do!

That's awesome! I have been looking for some time now for a replacement automatic shifter, and boot for my 8th gen corolla, but I can't find any anywhere Any recomendations on where I should look?
I did a shifter swap on my 1999 auto VE using a special one made for a Civic. It is the style where you push the button straight down with your thumb to shift but i glued the button in place and detatched it from the actual stick so you have to slam the entire piece down to shift.
Now, when i did this it had no overdrive button so i just soldered the two wires together. When would i ever want my overdrive turned off? does it really matter?
