Oil Burning?

I found a 2001 corolla with only 48k miles for $6k(does this seem like a good deal?)...and since I searched google for problems with that year, I've found a TON of reports concerning oil sludge and excessive oil burning...is this a super common issue? Is there a way to avoid it, or do people just buys these cars and assume they're going to burn oil? I didn't think oil burning was a common issue with toyota 4 cylinder engines...

Oil burning issue only occurs when the previous owner did not take care of the vehicle. Oil burning issue has been a common problem for 98-02 corollas. If your engine does burn oil just top off the oil regularly. If not replacing the engine with another would cost around 1000-2000$ depending on your area.

I bought my Corolla (very first Toyota) about a couple months ago and didnt know that oil burning was a common issue. But even if I had known about it beforehand, I still would have purchased it (I absolutely love this car and how it drives). Just depends on how much its been maintained. Luckily mine uses up very little. I did a 2000 mile trip in December and only added about half a quart.
