HI from PORTSMOUTH, OHIO
Hello, good morning TOYOTANATION!!!!!!!!

I'm "in" Ohio...

I have a 1998 TOYOTA COROLLA LX(that's what the emblem says)

Hopefully I have just a simple "COMMON" problem(s)

1) Engine just recently started "bogging" when accelerating.
That's just going down the road, but runs smooth on the HIGHWAY until I have to gain more speed, then it starts "bogging" again...and the check engine light begins to flash...then stop.

2) where would the O2 Sensor be on this vehicle?

3) How difficult is it to reach the Fuel Pump to REMOVE and replace it?

I come from a TOYOTA FAMILY in Hawaii(1976 corolla(mom), 1977 Corona wagon(my 1st car),1998 Camry(mom), 2005 Corolla(dad), 1998 COROLLA(me-currently) I live and die with TOYOTA so If anyone could answer any or ALL of these questions...PLEASE, your advice and help would be GREATLY appreciated.

THANK YOU!!!!

lx? are you positive its a 98 and not a 97?

either way, I would get the code read. Even if the lights not on, it may be in memory.

Also, the 98 - 02 doesnt have a serviceable fuel filter, as its part of the fuel pump.

The fuel pump is located under neath the passengers seat. (which is very easy to remove)

hopefully somebody else can tell you more about getting to the pump itself.

a flashing check engine light is in indication of detonation. that means that you were knocking, it pulled timing to keep the engine safe, and re-advanced it slowly once you reached cruising speed.

try filling up with a higher grade gas and see if it does it again. if it does, then you may need to seafoam your engine, and see if it doesnt help. to me it sounds like there is excessive carbon buildup on the top of the pistons, causing you to knock upon acceleration with a lower grade of gas.

A flashing CEL is an indication of misfire, not detonation. Sounds like a problem with the ignition system, like a failed (failing, if you will) coil pack. At high speeds, the coil pack can't deliver a strong spark although the system will idle (producing a spark at low cylinder pressures takes a lot less power than at high cylinder pressures), which is why the misfire manifests itself only at high speeds.
