Tradeing in my 2009 for a 1999 Corolla

Sup 8th gen, I am from 10th gen. I am actually about to trade in my 2009 corolla, for a 1999 one. I was stopping by to see what you guys think of this car, reliability wise. The one I am getting has 130,000 miles manual trans. I figured its probably good for another 100,000 miles, my friend has a 91 and his is at 240,000 miles, and its been driven the crap.
Anyways give me any thoughts on this model. Thanks.

Have you paid off the '09?
Don't trade in a car you owe money on! Essentially, you'll be making payments on a 2009, but driving a 1999.

I would get a 2001 or 2002 model if possible. The earlier year 8th gens were known for oil burning.

no way man, I am making $240 payments every month and $160 insurance. Trading in for an older model puts me at around $130 a month for the car, and $50 for insurance. Anyways so about the car, and issues with reliability?

I am aware of that issue, mostly due to PVC valve. On other occasions it may be caused by weak rings, but that would be an obvious sign. Lower pressure, decrease in gas mileage and so on.

I went from a 2010 Corolla to a 1998 Prizm...with an Acura RSX in between. My 98 Prizm with 137k burns about a quart of oil every 900 miles with no other problems/symptoms. There's no way you'd know it was an oil burner if I didn't tell ya. Power is fine and I can still get 32mpg with the 3spd auto if I'm careful; it's usually closer to 30mpg.

As far as reliability, a coworker of mine just traded his 99 Prizm in with just over 200k on it; it burned oil since about 40-50k. Adding oil isn't a big deal, but if you're going to by an 8th gen, I think you should plan on getting an oil burner and be happy if you don't.

I'd rather drive my 98 Prizm than the 2010 Corolla...I hated the 10th gen Corolla. The RSX was just to expensive to be a daily driver for the amount of miles I rack up.

Same here I don't really like new corolla. With the 99 I just have to do a pressure check and see. I am also getting it from a Toyota Dealer, so hopefully they fixed any problems with it. Its not certified pre owned or anything, but they cant just put defected car on the lot.

Don't be surprised if the compression test is fine and it burns oil anyway. I haven't done a test on mine but I really doubt it significantly lower than any other 1zz of comparable age/mileage. My car starts way too easily below 0° F to think that there is any kind of compression problem.

I keep hearing about the 8 gen oil burn... I guess I'm lucky my 1999 with 150k does not use up much oil at all.

Good luck. Smaller payments are a good thing now days.

Same here with my 2000. First Toyota I've owned and I love it (previously drove older domestic cars for many years and the Corolla is for sure a better quality car). Didnt even know about this oil burning issue until after I purchased it and joined the forum. Mine's at 103k miles and does not appear to burn any yet. Looks/drives like new.
