Strut replacement-autozone spring compressor okay?

It's been years since I replaced front struts and had to compress springs. I went and borrowed the cheap looking spring compressor from Autozone on Saturday. I put both of them on one of my springs and tightened that thing down but the spring didn't look to be moving any off of either the mount or the bottom of the strut assy. Maybe I didn't tighten it down enough, I was getting nervous with all of that tension. For you guys that did it, did you have one around 4 spring coils or did both of the tools go around 3 coils? I had both on three coils but it looked like I could have gotten at least one around 4, maybe that would have worked better? Someone give me some guidance here as I am contemplating quick struts although they are expensive. Thanks.

it's been a while since I did it but yeah I used the Autozone ones and I tell you omg it took a lot of turning with the wrench to get the springs to compress/decompress LOL.
