My Heater is Talking to me!

Hey All,

I spend most of my time on TN over in the Pickup/Hilux fourms but Im having issues with my 98 Corolla VE at the moment. When I turn on the heater with the fan at any level i start hearing a loud knocking sound coming from behind the glove compartment. It started out only making this knocking noise when it I had the heat on high and the fan high, but now it is going anytime I have the heat on. It sounds like there is a shot bearing in the blower. Im leaning on replacing the blower and seeing if that might help but just wanted to first bounce it off the fourm and see if anyone has a better idea than I do.

Blower motors are running around 50 bucks new on ebay. Any other possibilities out there? The car has about 130K miles on it right now and is running very very strong. Im expecting quite a few more so Im thinking that I should go with new parts.

Any help would be most appreicated!

Cheers,

I had the same problem a few months back, except mine was doing a loud growling noise. I got a used blower motor/fan at a junkyard for pretty cheap. Dont remember the exact price, but it was a lot less than $50.

Mine did the same when i bought it. It shook the whole dashboard so much that i couldn even run the heat on low. I bought a whole new motor expecting to replace it, But once i pulled the old one out i found it packed with acorns and leaves from rodents. Pulled it all out, blew it out with a air compresssor. And put it back in. Nice and quiet Returned my $70 motor and it was done.

Check that before you replace it, its worth a try

remove the blower and check for any debris, mice love to get stuff into there or leaves/stones/sticks/seeds can drop through the cowl into there as well. you could have something knocking around inside or it could indeed be a bad blower motor. better to replace it now than later when its also burned out the blower resistor.
