Help! P0500 and P1349

I recently got the P0500 and P1349 codes on my '02 Corolla after reseting the ECU (leaving it unplugged for a half hour to help it learn I had a SRI rather than a stock intake). Now I think the 500 is being cause by my gas gauge because it is stuck saying my tank is full but the code says its related to speedo and the tach, but I figure it would trip for anything in the gauge cluster.

As for the 1349 it is something to do with VVTi. The only thing I notice is I have a huge lag between stepping on the pedal and acceleration actually happening and there is a knocking or ticking sound that sounds like the lifters are off. I'm going to check the OCV filter later today and let you know if it changes anything but would still like other input in case that doesn't fix anything. I replaced my valve cover gasket a few months ago and noticed some pretty bad sludge buildup from the previous owner but have since used all synthetics and think it could be breaking seals and chunks of old oil off and clogging the OCV filter.

What do you guys think I should do to fix these problems?

Previous onwer neglect clogging the OCV filter is very possible. P0500 could be from a failed cluster swap or a bad VSS on the transaxle (bad connection).

If you haven't already done so - a couple of short oil change intervals with synthetic motor oils will help gently clean the motor out. A motor flush will be more aggressive, but I would be more afraid of that avalance of sludge and deposits clogging the various oil galleries in the engine.

There is a decent write up on how to clean a OCV filter on newcelica.org - might be one on here as well (I think I posted a link here from Corolland as well). Worth a shot to see if the filter is clogged - can't miss it, right below the OCV solenoid - front of the engine, just to the right of the alternator. Might have to move the alternator/intake manifold to get to the OCV filter below - if you have larger hands or bigger arms - not much room to maneuver in there.

I did the OCV filter cleaning. It seemed to be pretty clogged up and my oil looks very dirty for only being 5000 miles old with Mobil 1 extended performance synthetic and a really expensive K&N oil filter. There was a nice layer of sludge burnt onto the engine like I said so maybe its finally starting to come off. Luckily this did stop the ticking sound though. How can I do a motor flush? I have run Seafoam through the engine once to try to fix the ticking but no smoke came out of my exhaust like on their videos.

Now as for the P0500 I grabbed a new gauge motor controller thingy from a 99 Corolla that was working on the old one when it died and threw it in my cluster. It worked for a few minutes and read my tank right but today the thing shorted out and stopped again and I got the CEL going on and off most likely for this again. Where is the wiring located at? Also Im running a 15A(stock is 10A) fuse for my gauges could this be effecting and shorting out my gauge?

for the smokeshow you have to put the seafoam through the brake booster hose. be careful with that.
