Running your engine at high RPMs

Just wondering is it bad to run your engine at high RPMs? Sometimes i like to rip it from stand still at "L" (first gear) on the auto. and get to 5000 to 5500rpm... the engine gets real loud that it scares me sometimes lol thinking its going to blow.

Does anyone else do this to their rolla engines?

I dont like to abuse cars or drive a slow car as if it was a race car. As far as will it do any serious damage, probably not as long as its not in the red zone. There will be slightly more wear and tear on it at high RPM's than lower.

i dont abuse it. I just do it once in a while to see how it actually performs. (Only done it 5 or 6 times in the year that i have owned it now)

The car has to last me for another few years so i treat it quite well actually.

ripping on it from time to time shouldn't hurt it, the 1zz-fe is fairly robust..afterall its nearly the same engine they put in the mr-2 and celica. those cars 1zz get lighter rods though to help them rev up and down faster as well as slightly larger valves to breathe better at higher engine speeds.

romping once in a while can help blow out carbon deposits actually, can be healthy for the engine.

I've read around and everywhere there is massive mixed thoughts. On people claiming that its bad and people claiming that its good and people claiming that it doesnt matter as long as its not past redline.

Just wondering is everyone's corolla really loud when they run it at high rpms? I compare it to my dad's 09 rx350 and his V6 is alot more quiet? Or is something wrong with my rolla? Maybe the fact my rolla idles at 1400rpm is a really bad sign already, but when its not idling it seems fine?

The weight of the oil is something to consider. If you are running 0-20 as I do in my Camry I wouldn't think it would be good for extreme harsh loads. Although romping on it once in awhile isn't the same as trying to race or cruise at 110mph for hours at a time.

ive been to the drag strip many times in my corolla. i take it right to fuel cut each pass thru 1-3 (1/8th mile strip) i have not had any problems. i drive civil most of the time, but i do have my moments when i do rip on it, and my engine runs great. pulls hard to redline every time i mash the gas...well when it finally hooks LOL.

the fact of the matter is, it wont hurt it, even if you hit fuel cut (6250) every once and a while. the fuel cut is there to keep you from over revving. red line on our 1zz is far lower than the celica/mr2's (6700) so again its not bad at all. then get into the math of it and a 1zz has a decent rod to stroke ratio of 1.60:1 which is better than a stock 4age's rod/stroke ratio.

you wont hurt the engine at high rpm unless you just sit on the fuel cut for a long time, like 5 minutes.

You can hurt it, if the oil is not there to lubricate the parts. Also, you're putting more strain on the drivetrain (tranny, suspension) doing these "rip it" moments.

I wouldn't do that myself, I think that might make it over rev and bad things happen.

How do you over rev a car with an automatic transmission?

If you are close to the rev limiter and downshift it could force it to rev past the limiter. It would be harder to do with an automatic shure, but it could be done. I used to drive cement mixers many years ago, they would do it.

i envy you. i just hate how these things die after 5500. its why i shift early.

they die off because of the low rpm optimized intake manifold. its runners are 24 inches long. they are optimized for a max of 1500rpm. with the black plastic intake manifold the engine pulls hard to redline. it does not want to stop pulling. the more free an engine can breathe the better that engine will perform. the aluminum intake manifolds simply choke off the engine at high rpm. its nothing else. the plastic manifold is optimized for higher rpms with its fatter runners and shorter length (19 inches). plus a larger throttle body is always a plus. i plan on sending mine out to maxbore.com to have it bored out some more.
