99 4spd auto transmission failing? clunks into gear

my dad has a 99 corolla w/ the 4spd auto transmission

the car has 143,000km on it and recently the transmission started to clunk into gear. it seems to be doing it in every gear but mostly 3rd. sometimes it will clunk a bunch of times before staying in gear. anyone know what's wrong? is the tranny dying?

more info:
i've scanned the car w/ my obd2 reader but there were no stored or pending codes.
the tranny fluid was changed by me less than a year ago. at that time, there were no alarming bits of metal in the fluid.
the trannywas not low on fluid

i already had a peek at them. i didn't go under the car but i checked the front and rear mounts from above the engine. they looked fine.

the clunking seems to usually happen on upshifts but sometimes it will clunk repeatedly. i guess it might be going in and out of gear. the car is a base model so there's no tachometer

Should be - I'm pretty sure our TBs have two cables coming off of it - one for the throttle and one for the AT kickdown. Not certain this what you want to do if the transaxle is having "issues". Have to isolate the lunking noise, you mentioned it happens mosly in 3rd only - could you describe the clunking in more detail? Clunks when you manually select a gear, kick the O/D off, as you are accelerating, etc. This still happens when cold, when fully warmed up, moderate throttle, WOT, etc.

Could be a number of things causing it to "clunk" - from mounts, to bad axles, worn CV, loose lugnuts, etc.

it seems to happen in any gear but it was most frequently in the upper gears

it doesn't do it all the time but it's becoming more frequent.

there are times when it clunks several times in a row before staying in gear? i don't have a tachometer but it might be shifting up then down a bunch of times?

it happens even if o/d is off.

i have not noticed it when moving the shifter (might be due to the fact the clunking isn't frequent enough yet).

it seems to start clunking on upshifts but when it happens, it sometimes does it several times so maybe it's going up/down, up/down?

it happens if it's hot or cold. i have not tried WOT since the corolla is just an A => B car.

i'm pretty sure it's not due to bad engine mounts. the clunking doesn't happen all the time and i've already had a quick look at the front and rear mounts.

i'm also pretty sure it's not loose lug nuts because i already retorqued them w/ a torque wrench after removing the snow tires.

i'm not suspecting the CV joints since the boots are not torn and the car turns fine.

UPDATE:

i changed the fluid and it made no difference. old fluid was dark but not burnt or black.

the hard shifts went away after removing some slack from the TV cable. anyone know the proper procedure for adjusting the TV cable? all i did was remove some of the slack but i believe toyota has a procedure for adjusting the cable properly?
