2000 Airbag Removal

Hey everyone, just joined the site. I seem to be having a problem removing an airbag from the steering wheel off a 2000 Corolla. I've used the search, and have a Haynes manual. I loosened the two torx screws, but the thing will not come out! Is the procedure different once the airbag has deployed? I'm taking it off a column that I got at a salvage yard, so they obviously set it off before giving it to me. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Those torx bits on the side have to come past the screw case (there is a groove on the screws themselves that will catch on the case). Sounds like the screws are not far enough out and still making contact with the airbag assembly.
