How does cruise control work? Please help!

I tried using my cruise control on my 1999 corolla ce but it seems like I can't get it to work. I bought the car used so I don't know if it's broken or what...but generally how do you use cruise control? I tried pressing the button and play around with it but everytime I tried to release the gas pedal the speed goes down...shouldn't it stay at the same speed it's at until I step on the brakes? Please provide steps in pressing or releasing the button or whatever...thanks my fellow rollas !

Get to the speed you want. Press in the cruise control button and you should be cruising at that speed and you can let go of the accelerator. you can also shift the knob up and down to increase or decrease speed. dont remember if it was by 1 or 2 km/hr each interval.

  • Make sure the cruise control light is lit on the dashboard.
  • Get to the speed you want, then work the cruise control lever as if it were a turn signal lever, pushing it down.
It should start cruising at that speed; you'll feel the pedal position change.
  • To cancel cruise, without turning it off (light stays lit) pull back on the stalk as if you were flashing high beams.
  • To bump up your cruise speed, bump up the cruise lever.

This is based on the assumption that it works exactly like my '95 Previa LE and my '01 Corolla LE.
