Anyone know the official auto tranny fluid checking procedure for the corolla?

Ok,

I went through the 1999 owner's manual and it doesn't explain how to check the auto tranny fluid level (even though simpler things like oil level and brake fluid level have a detailed write-up). To make things more confusing, the dipstick has a cold and a hot level.

My honda civic manual says to check the auto tranny fluid level when the engine is hot but the fluid level should be checked within 90 seconds after shutting off the engine. I tried this method on the corolla but the results were overfilled when engine is cold and underfilled when engine is hot.

I then tried checking the level w/ the engine running. When the engine is cold and shifter cycled through the gears, it shows the level is low. After driving around to heat up the tranny fluid, the dipstick says the level is full.

Anyone have a printout of the official toyota instructions on how to check the auto tranny fluid level? Overall, the 8th gen corolla is starting to really piss me off. This car hasn't had any major problems since new but now that the car is getting older, problems are popping up everywhere. This car really seem to lack the Toyota quality that people rave about.

Transaxle should be up to normal operating temperature - just plan on checking the fluid level after your usual drive/commute.

- Park on level ground
- Car in park, engine running
- Level should be close to the "Hot" mark (between the two notches is OK, but be better the closer it is to the upper mark without going significantly over the upper mark).
- If too low, use a small funnel and refill through the transaxle dipstick hole - guard against overfilling the transaxle.
