to answer your question: no you do not need to remove the axle carrier.
all you need to do is take off the nuts and bolts (its got one of one and two of the other), break it loose, and remove it.
you may want to reread your manual as every repair procedure i've read never mentioned removing the axle carrier to remove the ball-joints. now you DO have to remove the ball joints to remove the axle carrier, but thats a horse of a different color
