Front Axle: Proper installation advice?

I repacked my front axles. They look and feel good.

I see they are designed to be somewhat adjustable, at least look like adjustable ones I've worked on before (using the axle nut torque as the preload). Anyways my question is...

Is there a proper way to adjust/install the front bearings and hubs?

Thanks!

-Randy

Old school - load the nut, wiggle the hub and note if it moves at all or not, should be no play. That's how I do it on all my older cars.

Or to do it right - need a dial indicator. I believe the specs say the allowable deviation (backlash) is 0.05mm (0.0020") allowable in and out near the center of the hub, 0.07mm (0.0028") allowable near the edge of the hub.

The hub bearings are not tapered as they would be on a RWD car. The torque on the axle nut does not add any preload to the bearings.

When installing the axle in the hub you should install the spindle nut and torque it to 166 ft/lbs (per the factory manual).

when installing a NEW wheel bearing its a good idea to run the axle nut down tight as the gun will go once to ensure its all pulled together, then back it off and torque correctly. I've seen problems with aftermarket hub bearings 'coming apart' shortly after installation due to them not being 100% pressed together when they're made. running the nut in will pull them 100% together and negate any manufacturing problems like that.
