overdrive button

I was wondering for any one who owns a 2001 corolla le or others...if the overdrive button is always activated on everytime you start the engine.and when you start the engine and it's on, you have to press the o/d button again to turn it off.

So my question is that was it built to be activated on all the time?Is everyone elses is differ that is always off when you turn on the engine...?

And should it be on all the time even around city?

Any vehicle I've ever owned that has had overdrive is set up this way. I've only turned the switch off in extreme conditions where the tranny would continually shift back & forth (in & out of overdrive).

On my Previa, it's a (physically) latching button, so "on" is "on" and "off" is "off".

On my '01 Corolla LE, the button is just a momentary switch, and OD defaults to "on" with every restart. That's just the way it is (not that I agree with that mode of operation).

I've never seen one that wasn't a momentary switch. Huh. You learn something every day.

On my 99 it was a "latching button" too - before I swapped in a manual that is.

Overdrive should always be on and the dash light should always be off...unless you're driving in conditions that are causing the transmission to shift in and out of overdrive. ie: towing or driving in the hills/mountains.
