Depends on the car - generally, if it has control arms in the rear, it can take a lower tie bar rod and tie the arms pivot together - mounted low on the outside of the car. Some use a rod and bearing type of connection, some look like a straight bar. Most common on your Honda and Nissans apps, or others that have control arm rear suspension. Basically braces the mounting points for the control arms in the rear of the car.
The 8th gen Corolla being a link design rear suspension - probably won't have too much to do with a bar designed after the control arm variants. If you get a chance to peek under the car, that rear subframe is pretty beefy, compared to the control arm variants. Only ones I've seen for this generation I would call a brace. Sits inside the car, behind the front seat and ties the two sills together. Some are bent to follow the floor contours, others just span the width of the car.
