I'm thinking about upgraded to a 2002 corolla S. It's black with black interior automatic. The car has 105,000 miles on it. The girl that's selling it says she's had it for almost 5 years and she drivers it a lot since she sells insurance. She's wanting 3600. I have a 99 corolla CE that's green with 164000 miles and it burns oil. If i get the 2002 will it be much better then the 99? What are the big differences between these years?

The biggest difference between the 99 and the 02 is that the 02 has the VVT-i motor. The nose gear is different too, but that is just cosmetic.
But $3600 is WAY too much. I might pay half of that but no more.
I don't think that is that bad....if she has had it serviced all throughout the years, then everything should be fine. I'd say she is a little high...id offer maybe 3200 at most.
One thing to keep in mind...gas is going up, and buying this car is a good investment. If your engine poops out on you, it will be about 3k after everything is all said and done. For approx the same price, you upgrade your engine (if it was taken care of), and the body.
Again though the price isn't unreasonable...A civic with the same miles would sell for 5K easy. Some things to keep in mind...
The EVAP systems on these cars overall is the problem...random check engine lights for this. Mainly emissions things...
The belt tensioner is also cumbersome, but fixable.
My dad has a 2000 corolla and I have a 2001, and we haven't had major issues, just the ones mentioned above. The VVTi systems are okay. O2 sensors are also an issue with the engine in general....the high rev starting up thing... Good engines overall though!
So overall is the 02 better then the 99 engine and problem wise? That's my purpose of upgrading the 99 burns a quart of oil every month or two. It's got 163k miles and this one has 105000 miles. She said the only thing that's been replaced on it was the rack and pinion from firestone. I know the S model got a sunroof and stuff but my main concern is how long it will last me with oil changes ever 3k and i drive a lot so..
Well it all depends on how you look at it...VVTi (vs non) has more components than just a standard engine, like the VVTi controller, and a cam sprocket. These can have problems if the engine hasn't been taken care of in the past, and with more components = more problems.
VVTi was meant to make the engine run more efficient for what you are doing. In this way the engine may be in better shape, than a non. On the other hand, depending on it was driven, it may be the opposite. In general though, and I think you know this, unless you open it up and see what is what inside, there is no way to tell.
My dad bought his corolla with vvti about 5 years ago, and it had 90,000 for 5k. He just commutes to work with it, so it is at about 120,000 now, and still no problems. Drove from Wisconsin to Florida and back, and it is still strong! We do all our own maintenance, so from our experience they are good engines. Obviously, people do have problems, but I bet the majority don't take care of their cars, or have it done. Hope this helps...

Other than the the VVTi head on the engine and the upgraded headlights, there is very little (if any) difference between the cars. The 01 & 02 cars may not have been quite as prone to oil burning as the 98-00 cars, but there is still definitely a percentage (how high or low that percentage is, is very hard to figure out) of them that are oil burners. I don't think I've read about ANY 03-08 oil burners....I'll be looking at 03-05 next go around.

the 9th gen corollas have no issue with burning oil. so whatever it was that caused it for us they fixed it for them.
