2002 front axle snap rings

can anyone confirm the 2002 should have snap rings on the axle ends before they go into the tranny? I'm out of town but my father swears the two he is working on fell right out and he doesn't see snap rings on the axles. I'm wondering if they were lost when the clutch was done a few months ago.
He noticed because both seals are leaking and he says he feels no resistance removing/installing the axles.
Thanks in advance

I have an 8th generation and pulled both axles two weeks back. Both Right and Left axles had a (psuedo) snap ring on transmission side. I had to pry my axles out, and putting them back in was a challenge. They don't exactly come off the shaft without wanting them to.
