Reuse Transmission Filter?

I just called my local Toyota dealer to see if they had a trans. filter kit in stock as I was going to change mine out this weekend. It's been shifting just a bit off lately (98k miles). Parts guy told me they reuse the old filters after just cleaning them out, does this sound like an acceptable thing to do? I'd like to stick with Toyota parts for things like this, but wasn't sure about re-using?

Transmission filter they may be right. It's more a wire mesh than an actual filter. I see you are going to drop the pan. Clean the filter, clean the magnets, add a back to back fluid change (2 full drain & fill 150 miles apart) and it should shift as new.

Thanks for the reply. So swap the fluid twice after cleaning the filter and adding new fluid then driving 150 or so?

Also, does anyone know if there's a gasket between the bottom of the filter and the transmission? I just thought of that if I do reuse, and should have asked the parts guy today...

Assume carb cleaner or the like is OK to use to clean the filter and the pan?

There is a gasket inbetween the filter and the transmission.

When I do my transmission change, I go to pepboys and get the pan gasket and new filter all in one set for 10 bucks. (its pretty cheap)

The filter is never dirty, its always the bottom of the pan and the magnents.

Great, going to have at it this weekend. Is there any way to get the rest of the ATF out of the system, maybe by using compressed air or some other technique.
