check engine lights on, gives codes p0441 p0446 which are connected to the evap system, should i test the valves and see if the charcoal canister is cracked, or start by chaning out my gas cap which can also cause the problem
Ok, i looked up the codes, and p0441 = incorrect purge flow, while p0446 = an electrical fault with the vent soleniod or wiring. I'd check the wiring and connections at the soleniod and test the soleniod resistance with a multimeter, and also check for a ground in the soleniod.
It's not the gas cap, it's not a cracked canister, it's not ground wires and it's not anything the dealer tells you. It's RUST. The are two vacuum valves on the canister of my 2000. One is the purge valve, the other is the evap valve. In northern climates, the little pistons inside both get rusted and get frozen in place. Then the CEL comes on.
They can be repaired in a DIY job, but since you are so far north, I'd recommend replacing them. I doubt that you can even get them apart to repair them due to the outside rust on them. You might find good used ones on FleaBay, but odds are you'll need to get new ones, and they aren't cheap. Neither is the labor to get them replaced.
You can get them off the canister without removing the canister from the car. Removing the canister requires removing the muffler - stellar design feature there by Toyota for the do it yourselfer. Not to mention the non-stainless bolts used on the stainless exhaust parts.
You can carefully cut, or break, the brackets that mount the valves to the canister, as they are all rusted to s--t anyway, and zip tie the new valves in place. Make sure you mark the vacuum hoses before you disconnect any.
And don't forget to use jack stands. Be safe and best of luck to you.
well the lights gone off, could have just be a lose wire, i checked my canister, its made of plastic, or at least got a plastic coating, didn't have a chance to take it apart to check the valves yet but i think i should regardless cause this is going to end up being a recurring problem, but i think it might be worth considering changing out the entire thing
ok well after looking at my fuel pressure sensor and switching valve connected to the canister there realy is a considerable amount of rust, now here come down to it, where can i get the entire new assembly, my napa and car quest have no idea what im talking about(o joy) so are there any canadian websites you can recommend to try and find the part, or should i give ye old canadian tire a whirl
I honestly think that your canister is ok. Unless you grounded out on it or filled it with gas, it should last forever. It's the two switching valves that are bad.
The canister may be available new on line at Rock Auto, but more than likely you'll need to go to the dealer, which sucks, I know. And I don't think the valves come as part of the new canister, so that sucks even more.
I believe that the valves are only available new from the dealer. I've been watching Fleabay, and missed an used evap valve that went for $29, a good deal in my view.
There is also your friendly neighborhood junk yard, but I've had no luck so far.
Sorry to say, but I guess if you want the stuff fast, the dealer is your only option.
Please keep us updated, and if I find anything, I'll let you know.
