I know your gonna tell me to go search and i have read through other forums about swapping but i just want to make sure if i have got it all correct according to MY knowledge about swappings...i was just wondering, say if i want to swap a 1zz fe from a celica (that is stronger than corolla 1zz fe) i would just need only the whole engine, and the ecu only right??and mabye some cables like tb cable??but for the wiring harness, it's all the same i suppose?
Also, is there any difference between a 01-02 corolla 1zz fe and those corolla 03 and up 1zz fe?perhaps any difference about celica's 1zzfe? or all the same?
there are differences in the 01-02 corolla, 03-07 corolla matrix, and the 00-05 celica 1zz's. infact there is alot of them. i am pretty much doing the same swap you are thinking about, but im taking a different approach.
im going to do my best to list out the differences in the years.
i shall start with the head.
the cams between the vvti corolla's and celicas are identical. the non vvti corolla intake cam is different, since it has less "flying magnets" for the cam angle sensor, because the 98-99 use waste spark instead of the newer and more robust coil on plug as found on all 00+ 1zz's.
all the corolla heads and matrix heads are the same. just the non vvti corolla heads are not drilled for the vvti components. the celica head and mr2 head are different. they have better castings inside the runners, and larger valves. i would say maybe .5mm larger MAX.
most everything else you will encounter inside the head will be the same, including the springs and retainers. i see no reason why the valvetrain wouldnt handle 7000rpm in stock trim, daily. its quite good really. the valve angles are actually close to that of a 20v silvertop 4age.
as for the block
the 98-07 corolla and matrix blocks are the same, the celica is almost identical but has 3 more bolt holes for the passenger side intermediate shaft bearing support bracket. (phew lol)
now from what i can tell, the pistons have slight differences, the celicas seem to be factory coated. the casting marks look identical, and the dish in each is the same. so no compression differences there.
the 98-07 corolla and matrix use fracture split forged powder metal connecting rods. the celica and mr2's use a weaker but lighter cast rod.
the crankshafts are all the same, but the vvti models will have a different reluctor ring than non vvti models. this is easy to swap if the engine is apart. the bearings, rings, gaskets, oil pumps, water pumps, and so on are all identical.
now the wiring is vastly different between the chassis. the celica has its ecu mounted in the engine bay, and uses different ecu plugs than the corolla/matrix. easy solution to remedy this is get a celica ecu, vvti corolla harness (00-02) and the ecu plugs from the celica engine wiring harness. then sit down with the wiring diagrams and go to town. if it sounds hard, wait a little bit. i will make a write up when i do it in a little bit...(august fyi) i will also take plenty of pics and try to make it as easy of a diy as possible.
now with all this being said, the best possible all stock toyota 1zzfe that could be built would consist of:
celcia block
corolla rods
any crank (use what you got aka corolla)
celica pistons
oem toyota gaskets
2zzge water pump (much better than the 1zz's and is a bolt on)
complete celica gt head (use the vvti intake cam in the intake, and the non vvti intake cam in the exhaust, it works, just have to time it right)
celica gt induction (intake mani and tb)
exhaust manifold for your car (aka corolla 98-02 for us)
and this one is optional delete the a/c and power steering (use the oem idler pulley from a mr2 for ps delete. can be had from MWR now as a kit.)
and i have rambled on long enough.

Let me add to the valve differences (in particular the markings) - confirmed on Spyderchat forums:
"A Z" stamped on the face of the valves:
Intake Valves = 32mm
Exhaust Valves = 27.5mm
"L" stamped on the face of the valves:
Intake Valves = 31mm
Exhaust Valves = 26mm
Celica GT and MR-S sporting the larger valves compared to valves in the Corolla, Matrix, Prism, and Vibe 1ZZ-FE engines.
thanks for the assist. i tryed to keep it so most everyone can understand it. i didnt even really get into the cool shit, like the fact the 1zz has a 1.60:1 rod to stroke ratio (optimum is 1.74:1, 4age is 1.58:1, 2zz is 1.62:1), or the 33.1* valve angle. 2zz is 43*valve angle. 16v 4age is 45* valve angle and the 20v 4a's are 35*. so i really LOL when people use the old "narrow valve angle hampers this engine" 1.9* off from a 20v 4age... hmm... makes you think. after all the 1zz was designed and based off what toyota learned with the 20v's, but they improved on it. made it smaller, lighter, and bigger displacement. just it got overshadowed by the 2zz. the design is right, just no one steps up and does anything with it.

Totally agree. I'd be really interested in seeing how this turns out. Bein 30 miles south of you I might even get a chance to spot you on the road heading to St. Mathew's or something!
Also thinking about doing work on my engine, but was thinking of doing stage 1 or 2 cams, bored engine (think I may use Kennedy Performance in Lex to do that work) with MWR's 82mm Wiseco's, and then found recently a site claiming to still have a few of the cat-back BBP 8th gen exhaust systems for about $260 after ship. Know anywhere I can get a decent port/polish on the exhaust mani, or somewhere that'll do the bore and hone for less than the $100 Kennedy wants?

good work is something you never want to cheep out on. the problem with the 82mm bore isnt the boring, its the fact the block has to be sleeved to accept that bore. that being said, the only place i would take my block to be sleeved other than darton or MWR would be ERL just across the bridge in southern indiana. they have done hundreds of sleeved honda blocks. with great results.
and i frequent all of louisville. infact i have a few friends in bardstown. i wish my corolla was up and running right now, because i wouldnt mind showing off its 6 spd goodness. but it is currently down for some work. still need to buy a few more things for it. really had hoped to have it running again by now, but import alliance costed a bit much this year, and im still catching up on bills. ill put it back together sometime this month or next.

Cams would be nice if someone actually made them for the non-vvti folks. i could only imagine how my car would sound with a stage one cam. it snarls pretty loud now.

well something like the stage 1 cams from crower really wouldnt change the sound that much. no lope or anything. stage 2&3 is a different story. the lift and duration on the stage one is only a bit more aggressive than stock. i will be opting for a set of stage 2's later on down the road. right now i just need to get this thing running. i miss driving it. mostly because my miata is soooo slow... well in a straight line... for now.
