2002 A/C diagnosis

My father (who is a retired hvac guy) used my manifold gauges today on his 2002. I'm outta town but he swears the low side pressure read about 40psi when trying to add some refrigerant and 0 psi on the high side ?
Is it even possible to have 0 psi on the high side? He had to jump the low pressure switch to get the clutch to turn on but he says the high didn't move off 0 psi after that either. Only thing comes to mind is maybe a bad schrader valve? He thinks a bad compressor but I can't wrap my mind around 0 psi on the high side. Any ideas ?
