Hello 1st post, new to the site, very informative for sure,
Anyway after researching, The car had the clicking when turning the ignition,
seamed like when cold it would happen more often, tested the battery, alternator, and determined most likely cause bad starter, so I replaced it, this is my mom's car I just bought her.. I just have bad luck.. I told her don't be afraid to drive the thing now, she went out, called me, same thing.. click click, had her turn on the headlights to see if it started nope, then I had her go in and out of park a couple times nope, then had her try it in neutral it started, don't know if that was luck, or maybe possible cause is the park/neutral switch or relay in the tranny.. and suggestions? I thought for sure it was the starter, looks like it was the original when I got it out, anyway she has a new one.. I have to get this thing pegged, what is causing this and what I can try next..If I plug in my scanner, will it show me anything.. oh if anyone needs tips how to get the starter out, I can help you.. thanks for any tips, on what this maybe, and I also hope to contribute
to the site, my wife also has a 01 camry, and get this.. only 48k on it,,
thanks again kappy

Reason: spelling
sounds like worn out starter contacts. rebuild or replace the starter, but also check the battery cables and terminals.
Did you replace the starter and the starter solenoid.
the NSS is definitely suspect as well as the ignition switch and a few other things. the best way to determine this is to get a multimeter( you can buy a digital one for $7 at harbor freight) and start testing for power, remember when you are testing the key must be on and to test the (starter control circuit)for power you must be turning the key. the starter relay is also suspect.

one more thing. i am not big on throwing parts at problems to fix them but if the battery is old replacing it is really maintenance. also since your Mom has an automatic tranny, ie NSS. she will not be able to pop start it if it doesn't start.
*you should get a haynes manual.......you can get them at amazon.com

thanks woodyg I did replace the starter and solenoid, starter has it on it.
battery is good charging while running, also 2 years old, like I said
when cold clicking mostly, the very next day after putting this starter in she got stuck, just got her the car.. what can I say.. it did engage after moving from park to drive a couple times, but gezzzz she is scared to take it anywhere, can't blame her I spend 3K and feel bad for her.. I could not afford a new one.. what do you think about a bad ground? what is the NSS
gezzzz I did have a haynes manual, wife had a corolla, I shot it out.. dummy.
I have a multimeter also a code reader.. oh another thing to find out
she has no heat, I never checked that when I got it, I was worried about the air was hot out.. think I got jipped on this car.. at least a have a few months before fixing the heat, bad thermostat I hope..

NSS=nuetral safetly switch=auto tranny,,,,,,,, cps=clutch positioning swithc=manual tranny. you do have a starter relay proablaly in the power distribution box. it could be the nss, the ignition swithc or a few other things.
